This is the last part of the very interesting interview with the prolific writer youth Alain M. Bergeron.

Roman starts : Among all your projects, which are you most proud of? Why?

Alain : The issue to $ 100 000. There is Captain Static , because I love comics. Roman starts : Which of your characters you he made the most progress? Explain how it made you grow.

Alain : What difficult questions that, dear Annie! The pool of characters is quite large. So let's go with David Bernard, the central figure of the book was a August 8 (Soulières). Roman starts : For whom do you write? Adults? Children? Adolescents?

Alain : The classic: I write first for me, for fun, even if, I repeat, it's still a job. As for my audience, my books are for ages 3 and up, and I include adults in there, because I put little winks to the adults who read them, this without slowing down or disrupt the narrative. I also have some publications that reach adults ( The Storm, for example, or Initiation among Soulières Editor).

Roman starts : How many books have you written altogether?

Alain : I reach the 140 books published this year. Next year (2011), I will meet and exceed my weight in pounds (around 155 ...)

Roman starts : Wow! Bravo! And the title of your most recent release is ...

Alain : There are ten or eleven new this fall (2010). So let's go for Master of Zions , the fourth adventure of Captain Static (Québec Amérique).

Roman starts : What houses publishing your books have they been published?

Alain : I work with over a dozen publishers: Les Éditions Michel Quintin, Soulières Editor, FouLire, Hurtubise HMH, Quebec America, The Blue Hours, Imagine Bayard Canada, Erpi, Boreal Maboul Les Éditions André Fontaine, The Short Scale, Publishing Peter Tisseyre ... It looks a lot like this.

Roman starts : What are you reading?

Alain : adventure novels, these days. My readings are influenced by the projects on which I work. Currently, I swim in full Bob Morane, to remember the adventure with a capital A, a theme that will color a new series (Billy Stuart), whose writing the fourth volume (released 2011). If I make Did you or Captain Static , then I dive into the comics. You will notice that even my hobbies are based on my work life ... Little, go!

Roman starts : Which authors that inspire you most?


Alain : René Goscinny, the master of subtle humor, intelligent, funny, falling not in malice, or rudeness. There is also Henri Vernes (prolific author of the series Bob Morane). I am a big fan of François Gravel. Quebec is the author I most read (as his works for adults for children).

I also read a lot of foreign cartoons (Mutts, The Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes, Herman, etc.).. Add to that the works of Peyo, Franquin and company.

I can hardly appreciate books for adults. It leaves me too much of my world of stories for children. When I read The DaVinci Code, I've had for at least two or three weeks before being able to find my "creative spirit" youth. We'll catch me doing ... This is the price (price very cheap) to do what I do.

Roman starts : What do you think are the main qualities to become a published author?

Alain : Write, write, write and write. It is no secret, no miracle. More you write, the more you find his style and it becomes comfortable, the more our work is likely to be published one day.

Roman starts : What would be the best advice you would give to a young writer eager to break into this business?

Alain : To read what is being done, as the genre that you want to explore in writing. Not to stop at a check (read: one or more rejection after sending manuscripts that, I could write pages and pages in my early writing years, I received no stops rejection letters - some fifty in all - but I continued to write anyway. I trust that one day my stories find their publisher. It what happened after seven or eight years ... ah, yes, it takes patience ...)

Once sent the manuscript, do not wait by the phone for a response from the editor ( it may take up to one year before making a decision). Enjoy this break to write something else. Should your manuscript is accepted, the publisher may be inclined to pay attention to your next job.

Friday, December 17, shortly before the time of my writing workshop, I get in my car and I'll get my mail. The red boxes on the side of the street. In a post office box larger, it is surely a brown envelope containing my manuscript rejected. Another ...

Well yes! That was not my non-surprise envelope. I slide under the arm and the other, then I insert the key into the top slot and I sat down in my car. I do not open the envelope, not right away. Once at the store at Cafe d'Art (this is where I give my workshops), I looked at the time. I still have ten minutes before the course starts. Well, I open it, otherwise I will not stop thinking about it during the workshop. I read the denial letter, I am disappointed, deeply. And sad too. All that work for that ... I block the emotions that are trying to mount, and then I go out. I want to dedicate myself to my role as facilitator, but not hard news affects my work. I succeed, the studio is going well. I feel very happy because after I shared my passion.

I returned home, opened the envelope with my emotions and sudden unlocked. All night, I cry! What a crybaby, you say? Yes, I will answer you. I'm sad because I trusted the publisher, but she turned away. Moreover, it is not the first time she turns me back. She has already done for other manuscripts. Here, I think I understand ...

The following days are painful. I have to manage my emotions come in waves and I pass through the body like a tidal wave. I feel a lot of anger, resentment and despair. I even temporarily lose the taste write ... This refusal raises another suffering, old as I carry from childhood. The feeling of rejection. Yep, I have to live with this little problem, incidentally, makes me tremendously evolve.

Today I wrote a new letter. After the holidays, I will send my manuscript to other publishers. That is my life as a writer. I must not let go. I must regain confidence in me. This is not because a publisher decides not to publish my manuscript, it is good to throw in the trash. It's just that my story does not suit them for XYZ reasons. Surely there on Earth a readership for this story, I have not written anything, it exists because it has something to say to someone. Different forms of dialogue - part 2

Here is the result of the last post about the different styles of dialogue.

2 - The indirect style : in this type of dialogue, the narrator reports the speech of his characters.

- Benefits: fluidity. The words are reported, without cutting the sentence by including, mostly in a subordinate clause.

- Disadvantages: it causes the sequence of tenses which distorts the exact words, changing personal pronouns and the use of that and that , adding to the sentence .

Example:

"When Jane saw his brother walking on the street Bronx, she ran to him and ordered him of clear out quickly. The creative process of Alain

Roman starts : How do you visualize how you create? (For example Mireille Pochard, in his book Writing a novel and getting published says that when she writes, she visualizes a ball, she imagines that everything is already inside her, she creates nothing, it is sufficient to unwind ... This does not undo a few knots that need to move!) What about you?

Alain : A ball? Like so ... In my case, it is much simpler: I see myself to blacken the pages of my notebook. Well, with this answer, I do not blacken the pages of this questionnaire ... I do not break my head too much about the creative process. This is something extremely complicated sum. What generates an idea? How often do we assemble words into a story please? Will I ever find a new project? The author, as the musician or artist, is it simply a channel connected to a common source of inspiration? Go know. I prefer not not break my head with theories and I prefer the action: writing, full stop.

Roman starts : How born your stories? Is the character comes first, plot, location, atmosphere, decor? Is it you who decides the story or your characters?

Alain : The first thing I care about in a story is the fall! If there is no fall, there are characters walking around in a vacuum and hoping for a story that does not succeed. Sometimes characters are created without my knowing quite what to make of it. In order not to forget, I write in a notebook and I myself a story, with a fall, is made in my little head. It can take days, hours (minutes as well), months or never occur altogether.

As I have a production schedule - let us not mince words - and I plan my work about a year in advance, I always know what's coming for me (with a few surprises about what I allow myself). For example, I have a vague idea for the next Small Pirates (Penguin Maboul) retravaillerai idea that I do that in a year. It seems that when the deadline approaches, some son in my mind together and cook up something. So that when I write the story, everything is almost ready to go.

In terms of my characters, even if I hear them say the aftershocks, I'm the boss, despite what they claim. Sometimes they go so fast that I hardly follow and write anything. This is also why I write by hand in a notebook. It goes much faster than the computer (and I will not lose my text, as it happened in the early years).

Roman starts : How do you immerse yourself in the minds of your characters and pass them feel inside?

Alain : I slip into their skin, simply. I have a dozen sets everywhere, but the "voice" of each character is distinct, although there may be some similarities in the end (of the story?). I know how everyone reacts to this situation. Let us not forget also the literary editor who receives the text and who also knows the characters.

Roman starts : Do you plan to write? Or rather, do you write your first draft by relying on what comes simply to your inspiration? How do you proceed?

Alain : Whether for a small album of 16 pages or 220 pages of a novel, the writing process remains the same: to First the plan. I often make the analogy with my animations. If I do not plan to go to school, I will lose myself, that's guaranteed. Same for writing. I write a summary of the story must take up a paragraph. Then write down all ideas that come to mind to enrich the narrative. Finally, I divided my story into chapters (depending on the target audience) and I make a summary for each chapter. Alain : When I know I'll write the next day, no matter where I am in my story, I always conditioned before going to bed . You could call this building creative. I am making a series of books, documentaries, cartoons (Did you know? Editions Michel Quintin) where I have to create 29 gags from a simple sentence. What is not always obvious. When I stumble on some gags, the evening before bed, I condition myself to find the solution to my problem. And this solution is fast enough the next day.

Roman starts : What are your tips to annihilate the force of your inner critic to sabotage your writing? (When you're stuck, what do you get out?)

Alain : to writing novels, in fact I never blocks because the plan mentioned above. I can sometimes stumble over sentences, but I also gives me the chance of not achieving perfection from the first draft, to be human after all.

My score Years in journalism serves me well. In a dozen books per week (newspaper), there was no time to dwell on one point.

As for my inner critic, the bastard, I fired for sabotage! I can easily get by without his contribution. Someone had told me that is not as rotten as you think ... to add in the same breath we are not as good as you want ...

So let's not be too hard on ourselves, while keeping your feet on the ground.

I feel good with myself.

I wade into chaos.

I write.

A new story. A new literary. Constraint: twenty pages, double spaced. Genre: fantasy, fantasy or science fiction. I chose fantasy!

At the same time, I finished reading an extraordinary book, which allowed me to reconcile myself more with what I am. Title: The Art of FICTION WRITING , Emily Hanlon. I liked what I read. I even loved it! I finally found a book that explained to me what I was and what I still live with my creativity. This is totally awesome!

I feel good with myself.

Since the Nano, something happened, a door opened, a peace came and moved me. I feel calm and unhurried, as if finally I had no fear of others' thoughts about myself and what I write.

And yet, I received two rejections in recent days. My new A Spy in the supermarket was not selected for the magazine Zinc. And I received today by mail, an envelope containing one of my scripts (one for readers aged eight and over) together with my letter. Inside, no rejection letter. Nothing. Nada! Good. It certainly was not the right publisher for this story ...

I feel good with myself.

A trust is there. Peace.

I laugh with my son, with my spouse. We're happy, we love each other. Yes, yes, we love each other! Love is everything! Yes, yes, love ... Between a writer and his characters, between a writer and his story between a writer and ideas between a writer and his readers. Yes, yes ... If you write is simply out of love. Roman Starts: When manifested in your life your desire to write and when did you start writing?

Alain : The trigger time of my life to write was when I had my boy (1989). I wanted to leave something of myself. Not one to build treehouses (dangerous for him ... and for me to make), I told myself that I could try to write stories, always loved reading. I won awards with these stories, which turned into books. There. Simply. For cons, I had dabbled in writing a previous life when I played music (we all make mistakes in our journey) and I did the story of a group of young musicians eager to become the next Beatles ... (25 years later, I used this pattern to write the book "The Storm" in Soulières Publisher, 2004).

Roman starts : Is that writing is a need for you? If yes, why?

Alain : is a question which I did not even stop during the last twenty years ... I just realized that yes, I love to write. But what I love above all is to create a story: think about it, take notes, do research, find jokes, plot twists, giving birth to characters, universes, etc.. That's really my cup of tea. The writing is what helps make it all on paper.

Roman starts : Do you write full time? Or in parallel with another job?

Alain : I started writing in 1989. Meanwhile, I had a job as a journalist. So to change my mind on my work, at home in the evening or on weekends, I wrote ... I did both until autumn 2005. I then decided to leave my job 'safe' as a journalist to devote myself entirely to writing youth. I never, never, never (you did I say?) Regretted my choice. It'sa tremendous privilege to earn a living doing what you love above all. I appreciate it every day!

Roman starts : What is your writing routine? (Write-up in the morning, afternoon, evening or at night? How many hours per day? What you surround yourself to write? Pictures? Plant? From doggies? From your cats? Enter you at home or in cafes, in parks or in the heart of nature? Do you have a space just for you and if so, what does it look like? Etc.)

Alain : I write mostly in the morning. I'm an early riser (not need much sleep, a definite advantage). Once my daughter (I had a daughter in 1998) for the school part, I can devote myself to my book projects (establishment or writing). Except, I'm not the type to start writing at 8 pm 30 and spinning nonstop until noon. There are pauses (re-breakfast, I have two dogs who constantly harass me to go outside, telephone, email checking, etc..). Physically, too, have the shoulders and back on fire if I stay too long in the same position. So I move a lot. I even leave home to go to post things or to walk the dogs (a good time to think). As I am my own boss, well ... (but a very demanding boss, sometimes a little too!)

My afternoon and my evenings are devoted especially to the correction of manuscripts ( mine) and trials to try to meet the most urgent emails (one late chronic), to prepare for future events ...

I work in the basement in my office. On my walls, I have some original drawings by artists whom I am associated (Marie-Claude Demers, Fil and Julie, Fabrice Boulanger, Stephane Poulin Sampar).

However, when I write the first version of my story, I'm not in front of the computer, but rather on the ground floor, in a rocking chair ( big comfort, whatever), before the big kitchen window overlooking the mountains with us. I always write my first version at home, in a notebook (yes, I am very high-tech).

Roman starts : What part in creating a story do you prefer? Gestation, the first draft, character development, rewriting, etc.. ? Why?

Alain : (see answer # 2). I like to create the entire context leading up to the story. Having been a journalist for over twenty years has helped me greatly in structuring my stories quickly, and my characters their world.

I can not say it excites me terribly to have to see the computer what I wrote on the paper (it finished, ever before). That's really work. However, once all the text written to the computer, then I found the pleasure to be corrected and the corrected again. Until the literary editor corrected my manuscript back to me ... So here, friends ...

Roman starts : If you had to use a metaphor to describe the type of writer you are, what would it be?

Alain : A box of surprises ... You never know what will come out, but we know that something will emerge from all this ...

Roman starts : How would you describe your relationship with writing?
